Sorting through a Twitter stream

I'm not following that many people on Twitter, but even with only a few hundred people the amount of updates coming across is unmanageable. Given a finite amount of time to spend watching Twitter, I'm plagued by the feeling that I'm missing important tweets.

Sometimes when I look to see what's gone by, I see something interesting and feel good about using Twitter. Other times, I'll scroll through 100+ updates and not see anything compelling. But I have this nagging feeling that there were other tweets just minutes before that I didn't see which I would have enjoyed.

There are tools out there, like Tweetdeck, which mitigate the problem to some degree. I can at least keep track of what my favorite people or groups are talking about. To me it's still woefully inadequate. Even my favorite people talk about boring things (to me), and other people send across great content from time to time.

You probably know where this is leading: I started throwing together an application to try to improve the signal to noise ratio. If I feel the need for this, those users that are following thousands of people must be in dire need. Or maybe they just ignore most people, I don't know. Either way I'm going to run down this road a ways and see what comes of it.
